New Scientific Association at the Faculty

In this academic year at our Faculty a new scientific association JAVATECH was established, whose supervisor is dr. Dariusz Król. The initial meeting of JAVATECH was held on October 20 2016. Over 20 students have enrolled and elected their representatives to the Board. Eventually, they have declared their willingness to cooperate in the following research fields:

  • analysis of large amounts of data using Business Intelligence Software tools
  • analysis of images using devices such as smart glasses
  • analysis of solutions and models of integration of information systems using an Enterprise Service Bus
  • analysis of data related to scheduling and production processing using solutions such Advanced Production Planning and Scheduling Software

Prof. Tetsuji Kuboyama from Gakushuin University, Tokyo

On 14.07.2016 Prof. Tetsuji Kuboyama from Gakushuin University, Tokyo, has visited the Department of Information Systems of WUT and has given the guest lecture "Supervised Feature Selection for Categorical Data" for the staff and students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Management. Prof. Kuboyama along with dr Maciej Huk visited also WCSS HPC centre in Wroclaw and AGH Cyfronet HPC centre in Krakow considering their usage for realization of joint research projects..

ACIIDS 2016 Conference in Da Nang

The 8th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2016) took place in Da Nang, Vietnam. ACIIDS 2016 was co-organized by Bina Nusantara University from Jakarta (Binus University) and Wroclaw University of Technology in cooperation with IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence, Bina Nusantara University from Jakarta, Ton Duc Thang University and Quang Binh University from Vietnam. This year the conference was organized under the honorary patronage of Dr. Jaroslaw Gowin, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and Minister of Science and Higher Education.

General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Six representatives of our Department: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, Dr Kazimierz Choroś, Dr. Adrianna Kozierkiewicz-Hetmańska, Dr. Dariusz Król and Dr. Andrzej Siemiński took part in the conference. Researchers from our Department were engaged in the organization of ACIIDS 2016.

Submissions came from 36 countries from all over the world. Each paper was peer reviewed by at least two members of the International Program Committee consisting of above 250 scientists from 64 countries. Only 153 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in the two volumes of Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series (Vol. 9621 and 9622). Moreover, 40 additional papers were presented during poster sessions and were published in the form of chapters of the scientific monograph issued in Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 642) by Springer Verlag.

Keynote speeches were given by Prof. Tzung-Pei Hong from National University of Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Prof. Saeid Nahavandi from Deakin University (Australia), Prof. Jun Wang from City University of Hong Kongand Piotr Wierzchoń from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Poland).

Dr. Bogdan Trawiński chaired the special session on Multiple Model Approach to Machine Learning (MMAML 2016) with 9 papers accepted and orally presented. The MMAML 2016 Special Session was co-organized by three colleagues Dr. Edwin Lughofer (Austria), Dr. Tomasz Kajdanowicz (Poland), and Dr. Bogdan Trawiński (Poland).

ICCCI 2015 Conference in Madrid

The 7th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence Technologies and Applications (ICCCI 2015) took place in Madrid, Spain. The conference was organized by Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with two Spanish universities: Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universidad Auntónoma de Madrid. The conference was run under the patronage of the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence. General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Six representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, Dr. Kazimierz Choroś, Dr. Agnieszka Indyka-Piasecka, Dr. Bernadetta Maleszka, and Dr. Marcin Maleszka took part in the conference.

186 papers from 32 countries all over the world were submitted to the conference. 110 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in two volumes of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series (vol. 9329 and 9330).

Keynote speeches were given by Prof. Francisco Herrera z Universidad de Granada (Spain), Prof. B. John Oommen z Carleton University (Canada), Prof. Guy Theraulaz z Université Paul Sabatier (France), and Jorge Ufano from Spanish company INVINCO.


ACIIDS 2015 Conference in Bali

The 7th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2015) took place in Bali, Indonesia. ACIIDS 2015 was co-organized by Bina Nusantara University from Jakarta (Binus University) oraz Wroclaw University of Technology in cooperation with IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence, IEEE Indonesia Section, Ton Duc Thang University and Quang Binh University z Wietnamu. This year the conference was organized under the honorary patronage of prof. Lena Kolarska-Bobińska, the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Eight representatives of our Department: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Prof. Aleksander Zgrzywa, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, Dr Kazimierz Choroś, Dr. Marek Kopel, Dr. Adrianna Kozierkiewicz-Hetmańska, Dr. Dariusz Król and Dr. Andrzej Siemiński took part in the conference. Researchers from our Department were engaged in the organization of ACIIDS 2015.

Submissions came from 44 countries from all over the world. Each paper was peer reviewed by at least two members of the International Program Committee consisting of above 250 scientists from 64 countries. Only 117 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in the two volumes of Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series (Vol. 9011 and 9012). Moreover, 38 additional papers were presented during poster sessions and were published in the form of chapters of the scientific monograph issued in Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 598) by Springer Verlag.

Keynote speeches were given by Prof. Nikola Kasabov from Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand), Prof. Suphamit Chittayasothorn from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (Thailand) and Dosam Hwang from Yeungnam University (Korea).

Guest lectures at Biunus University in Jakarta

During two days before the ACIIDS 2015 conference Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen and Dr. Bogdan Trawiński delivered a few guest lectures to undergraduate and graduate students of Binus University in Jakarta (Indonesia). They also conducted a seminar for Ph.D. students. Prof. Nguyen held also talks on the exchange of graduate students as well as a sandwich programme for doctoral students.

Doctor Trawinski’s habilitation

Doctor Bogdan Trawiński attained the habilitation qualification (D.Sc.) at the Faculty of Computer Science and Management of Wroclaw University of Technology. His habilitation’s was based on the mono-thematic series of papers entitled „Modelling regression problems using fuzzy systems”.

ICCCI 2014 Conference in Seoul

The 6th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence Technologies and Applications (ICCCI 2014) took place in Seoul, Korea. The conference was organized by Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with three Korean universities: Yeungnam University, Hanyang University, and Chung-Ang University. The conference was run under the patronage of the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence. General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Five representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, Dr. Bernadetta Maleszka, Dr. Marcin Maleszka, and Mr. Rafał Kern took part in the conference.

205 papers from 23 countries all over the world were submitted to the conference. Only 70 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in the volume of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series (vol. 8733). Moreover, 20 additional papers were presented during poster sessions and were published in the form of chapters of the scientific monograph issued in Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 572) by Springer Verlag.

Marcin Pietranik’s doctorate

Marcin Pietranik, our Ph.D. student, defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled "A method for ontology alignment based on semantics and valuations of attributes" at the Faculty of Computer Science and Management of the Wrocław University of Technology. Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen was the supervisor of the thesis. Doctor Pietranik joined the staff of our Division.

ACIIDS 2014 Conference in Thailand

The 6th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2014) took place in Bangkok, Thailand. ACIIDS 2014 was co-organized by King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand and Wrocław University of Technology, Poland in cooperation with IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence, Hue University, University of Information, Technology UIT-HCM, and Quang Binh University (Vietnam).

General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Six representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Prof. Janusz Sobecki, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, Dr. Marcin Maleszka, Dr. Bernadetta Maleszka, and Mr. Piotr Chynał took part in the conference. Researchers from our Division were engaged in the organization of ACIIDS 2014.

Submissions came from 32 countries from all over the world. Each paper was peer reviewed by at least two members of the International Program Committee consisting of above 250 scientists from 63 countries. Only 124 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in the two volumes of Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series (Vol. 8397 and 8398). Moreover, 35 additional papers were presented during poster sessions and were published in the form of chapters of the scientific monograph issued in Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 551) by Springer Verlag.

Keynote speeches were given by Prof. Klaus-Robert Müller from TU Berlin (Germany), the member of the German National Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina, Prof. Leszek Rutkowski from Czestochowa University of Technology, the member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Vilas Wuwongse, the President of Asian University (Thailand), and Prof. Kang-Hyun Jo from University of Ulsan (South Korea).

Bernadetta Maleszka’s doctorate

Bernadetta Maleszka, our Ph.D. student, defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled "Methods for User Personalization in Document Retrieval Systems Using Collective Knowledge" at the Faculty of Computer Science and Management of the Wroclaw University of Technology. The supervisor of the thesis was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Doctor Maleszka joined the staff of our Division.

ICCCI 2013 Conference in Craiova (Romania)

The 5th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence Technologies and Applications (ICCCI 2013) took place in Craiova, Romania. The conference was organized by Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with the University of Craiova (Romania). The conference was run under the patronage of the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence as well as of the Romanian Association of Artificial Intelligence (ARIA) and IEEE Romania (Computational Intelligence Section). General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Four representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Prof. Janusz Sobecki, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, and Mr. Marcin Pietranik took part in the conference.
Many papers from 24 countries all over the world were submitted to the conference. Only 72 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in the volume of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series (vol. 8083). Moreover, 19 additional papers were presented during poster sessions and were published in the form of chapters of the scientific monograph issued in Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 513) by Springer Verlag.

ACIIDS 2013 Conference in Malaysia

The 5th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2013) took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. ACIIDS 2013 was co-organized by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia) and Wrocław University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with Nguyen Tat Thanh University (Vietnam). General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Five representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Dr. Adrianna Kozierkiewicz-Hetmańska, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, Mr. Marcin Maleszka, and Ms. Bernadetta Mianowska took part in the conference.
Submissions came from 20 countries from all over the world. The conference papers were divided into three tracks: Intelligent Information Systems, Intelligent Database Systems, and Tools and Applications. Each paper was peer reviewed by at least two members of the International Program Committee and International Reviewer Board papers consisting of 129 members. Only 108 papers with the highest quality were selected for oral presentation and publication in the two volumes of Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series (Vol. 7802, 7803).
Keynote speeches were given by Prof. Dr. Sigeru Omatu from Osaka Institute of Technology (Japan), Prof. Dr. Hoang Pham from the State University of New Jersey (USA), Prof. Dr. Naomi Salim from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), and Associate Prof. Dr. Mong-Fong Horng from Kaohsiung University (Taiwan).
Dr. Bogdan Trawiński chaired the special session on Multiple Model Approach to Machine Learning (MMAML 2013) with 7 papers accepted and orally presented. The MMAML 2013 Special Session was co-organized by three colleagues Dr. Edwin Lughofer (Austria), Prof. Przemysław Kazienko (Poland), and Dr. Bogdan Trawiński (Poland).
The Special Session on Intelligent Recommender Systems (IRS), which gathered much of attention from the ACIIDS 2013 participants, was also organized by our Division employees Dr. Adrianna Kozierkiewicz-Hetmańska and Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen.


Our book will be translated into Chinese

Springer-Verlag announced that it had concluded a contract with Chinese publishing house National Defence Industry Press for the Chinese translation of the book: New Challenges for Intelligent Information and Database Systems. The co-editors of the book are Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen and Dr. Bogdan Trawiński. The book was published in English within the Springer series Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 351) in 2011. It contains selected and extended papers presented at the 3rd Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS 2011), which was held on April 20-22, 2011 in Daegu (Korea). The Chinese edition will be published in 2000 copies. The Pekingese publisher National Defence Industry Press during his 60-year activity published above 8000 titles in above 100 million copies and belongs to the biggest Chinese scientific and technological publishing houses.

ICCCI 2012 Conference in Ho Chi Minh City

The conference was organized by Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with the University of Information Technology (Vietnam National University VNU-HCM, Vietnam). The conference was run under the patronage of the Committee of Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences, and the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence. General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. A number representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Prof. Radoslaw Katarzyniak, Prof. Janusz Sobecki, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, and Mr. Marcin Pietranik, Mr. Grzegorz Popek, Mr. Grzegorz Skorupa took part in the conference.
Above 397 papers from 33 countries were submitted to the conference. Only 113 best papers were selected for oral presentation and publication in the two volumes of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series (Vol. 7653, 7654).
Keynote speeches were given by four Professors: Philip Chen IEEE &AAAI Fellow, President of IEEE SMC from University of Macau, Gottfried Vossen from European Research Center for Information Systems (Germany), Longbing Cao from University of Technology Sydney (Australia), and Adam Grzech from Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland).


International Scientific School of Knowledge Management in Dong Hoi

The Scientific School of Knowledge Management, an international scientific school for researchers in the field of Knowledge Management, was held on 25-26 November, 2012 in Quang Binh University, Dong Hoi City, Vietnam. The spirit of this International School was inspired by the prestigious scientist organizations, IEEE TC on CCI, ACIIDS and ICCCI conferences, the influence of which spread to generations of researchers in computer science.
Lectures, seminars, and discussions was organized at the highest level. The school objective was to contribute to advances in a rapidly evolving field, and to foster participation in the adventure of the research. It provided up-to-date, state-of-art knowledge on emerging areas and addresses important issues, going from basic to applied research on knowledge management.
The Scientific Chair of the School was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen and a Committee Member was Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, The lectures were given by Prof. Longbing Cao from University of Technology Sydney (Australia), Prof. Philip Chen, President of IEEE SMC from University of Makau, Prof. Mong-Fong Horng from National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences (Taiwan), Prof. Geun-Sik Jo, from Inha University (Korea), Prof. Kang-Hyun Jo from University of Ulsan (Korea), Prof. Thi Hoai An Le from Lorraine University (France), Prof. Dinh Tao Pham from INSA-Rouen (France), Prof. Ali Selamat from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), Prof. Janusz Sobecki and Dr. Bogdan Trawiński from Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland).
Prof. Sobecki’s lecture title was “Recommendation Systems Taxonomy” and Dr. Trawinski’s lecture title was “The application of fuzzy systems to solve practical problems”.

KES-AMSTA 2012 Conference

The 6th International KES Conference on Agents and Multi-agent Systems – Technologies and Applications (KES-AMSTA 2012) took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Professor Hamido Fujita’s invited lectures

Professor Toyoaki Nishida from Iwate Prefectural University (IPU), Iwate, Japan gave a series of invited lectures on intelligent user interfaces between human user and computers to the doctoral students and research workers of our University. The lectures were cofunded by European Union within European Social Fund Framework. The initiator of the visit was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Prof. Hamido Fujita is a professor at Iwate Prefectural University (IPU), Iwate, Japan. He is a director of ARISES and Intelligent Software Systems. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Knowledge-Based Systems, Elsevier. He received Honorary Professor title from Óbuda University, Budapest, Hungary in 2011. He has supervised PhD students jointly with University of Laval, Quebec, Canada; University of Technology, Sydney, Australia; University of Paris, France; and University of Genoa, Italy. He is currently heading a number of projects including Intelligent HCl, a project related to Mental Cloning as an intelligent user interface between human user and computers and SCOPE project on Virtual Doctor Systems.


ACIIDS 2012 Conference in Taiwan

The 4th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2012) took place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. ACIIDS 2012 was co-organized by National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, National Taichung University of Education, Taiwanese Association for Consumer Electronics (TACE), and Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland). General Chair of the conference was Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen. Three representatives of our Division: Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Dr. Bogdan Trawiński, and Mr. Grzegorz Skorupa took part in the conference.

Above 470 papers from about 15 countries were submitted to the conference. Only 161 best papers were selected for oral presentation and publication in the three volumes of Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series (Vol. 7196, 7197, 7198). Keynote speeches were given by four Professors Jerzy Świątek (Poland), Shi-Kuo Chang (USA), Jung Wang (Hong Kong), Rong-Sheng Xu (China).

The great success was achieved by the team of authors from our Division including Professor Radosław Katarzyniak and his two doctoral students Wojciech Lorkiewicz and Grzegorz Skorupa who were awarded one of “The Best Paper Award” for  the paper titled . A Multi-agent Strategy for Integration of Imprecise Descriptions.

Dr. Bogdan Trawiński chaired the special session on Multiple Model Approach to Machine Learning (MMAML 2012) with 10 papers accepted and orally presented. The MMAML 2012 Special Session was co-organized by three colleagues Prof. Oscar Cordón (Spain), Prof. Przemysław Kazienko (Poland), and Dr. Bogdan Trawiński (Poland).


IEEE Senior Member for Dr. Dariusz Król

Prof. Dr. Dariusz Król achieved IEEE Senior Member grade. To be elevated to IEEE Senior Member a candidate shall have been in professional practice for at least ten years and shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years. Fewer than eight percent of the IEEE's 400,000 members hold this prestigious grade of membership, which recognizes significant professional technical accomplishment. Successful ACIIDS 2011 Conference

The 3rd Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2011) took place in Daegu, Korea. ACIIDS 2011 was co-organized by Yeungnam University (Korea) and Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland).


Almost 330 papers from about 30 countries were submitted to the conference. Only 110 best papers were selected for oral presentation and publication in the two volumes of Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series (Vol. 6591, 6592). Due to high quality 35 additional papers were presented during poster sessions and were published in the form of chapters of the scientific monograph issued in Studies in Computational Intelligence (vol. 351) by Springer Verlag.


The papers covered the following topics: intelligent database systems, data warehouses and data mining, natural language processing and computational linguistics, semantic Web, social networks and recommendation systems, technologies for intelligent information systems, collaborative systems and applications, e-business and e-commerce systems, e-learning systems, information modeling and requirements engineering, information retrieval systems, intelligent agents and multi-agent systems, intelligent information systems, intelligent internet systems, intelligent optimization techniques, object-relational DBMS, ontologies and knowledge sharing, semi-structured and XML database systems, unified modeling language and unified processes, Web services and semantic Web, computer networks and communication systems.


Keynote speeches were given by four Professors Hamido Fujita (Japan), Halina Kwaśnicka (Poland), Yong-Woo Lee (Korea), and Eugene Santos Jr. (USA).



Successful MMAML 2011 Special Session

The MMAML 2011 Special Session on Multiple Model Approach to Machine Learning was organized within the 3rd Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2011).


MMAML 2011 was one of the biggest special session held by ACIIDS 2011. 23 papers were submitted to the Special Session and majority of them were of a good quality. 10 best quality papers were accepted to be orally presented at the MMAML 2011 special session and published in the LNAI volumes 6591, 6592. Moreover, next 3 papers have been selected for poster presentation and the edited book published in the Springer Series of Studies in Computational Intelligence, vol. 351.


All 13 presented papers were invited to special issue "Hybrid and Ensemble Methods in Machine Learning" of the prestigious journal International Journal of Applied Mathematics&Computer Science, Impact Factor (2009): 0.684, which will be published in 2012.

The MMAML 2010 Special Session on Multiple Model Approach to Machine Learning was organized within the 2nd Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS-2010).


MMAML 2010 was the biggest special session held by ACIIDS 2010. 35 papers were submitted to the Special Session and majority of them were of a good quality. According to the rigorous Springer’s rules 13 best quality papers (i.e. 35%) were accepted to be orally presented at the MMAML 2010 special session and published in the LNAI volumes 5990, 5991. Moreover, next 5 papers have been selected for poster presentation and the edited book published in the Springer Series of Studies in Computational Intelligence, vol. 283. The authors of all 18 accepted papers represent scientific centers from 15 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Poland, Spain, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

The Editor-in-Chief of TCCI journal

Prof. Ngoc Thanh Nguyen was nominated for the Editor-in-Chief of a new international scientific journal entitled Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence (TCCI).


TCCI is one of 12 journals included in a prestigious Springer’s LNCS/LNAI series. TCCI strives to cover new methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of computational collective intelligence understood as the form of intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals (artificial and/or natural). The application of multiple computational intelligence technologies such as fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, neural systems, consensus theory, etc., aims to support human and other collective intelligence and to create new forms of CCI in natural and/or artificial systems.

Prof. Toyoaki Nishida’s short bio

Toyoaki Nishida is a professor at Kyoto University in Japan. He is an acknowledged authority in artificial intelligence and human computer interaction. He founded an international workshop series on social intelligence design in 2001. He opened up a new field of research called Conversational Informatics in 2003. He is an associate editor of the AI&Society journal, the New Generation Computing journal, a technical committee member of Web Intelligence Consortium, the IFIP TC12 representative from Japan, a director of Information Processing Society of Japan, and an associate member of the Science Council of Japan.

Great success of the first ICCCI 2009 Conference

The 1st International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence (ICCCI 2009) was held in Wroclaw, Poland. The conference was organized by Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan).


The conference attracted above 200 scientists and practictioners who submitted their papers for four main tracks and three special sessions covering collective decision making, multiagent systems, social networks, semantic web, ontology management, dynamics of real-world social networks, nature-inspired collective intelligence, web systems analysis, collective intelligence for economic data analysis. Above 90 papers were presented by researchers coming from Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Ireland, Korea, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, Venezuela, and Vietnam.


Keynote speeches were given by three Professors Roman Słowiński (Poland), Pierre Lévy (Canada), and Piotr Jędrzejowicz (Poland).

ACIIDS 2009 started a conference series in Far East

The 1st Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS 2009) was held in Dong Hoi City, Vietnam. The conference was organized by Wrocław University of Technology (Poland) in cooperation with Quang Binh University (Vietnam). ACIIDS 2009 started a conference series which constituted a forum of scientific cooperation in the field of intelligent information systems and database systems in Far East. The Head of KMS Division Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, who was born in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam, was the originator of the ACIIDS series.


Above 240 papers from 20 countries were submitted to the conference. 83 best papers were selected for presentation and publication proceedings issued by IEEE Computer Society Press. Keynote speeches were delivered by five Professors: Robert J. Howlett from Brighton Univeristy (UK), Tzung-Pei Hong from National University of Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Kazumi Nakamatsu from University of Hyogo (Japan) as well as by Adam Grzech and Adam Janiak from Wrocław University of Technology.

The aim of the program was to promote information technologies in Wrocław. The initiator of the visit was Dr. Bogdan Trawiński.


Prof. Cordon’s short bio

Oscar Cordón received his M.S. degree (1994) and his Ph.D. (1997) both in Computer Science from the University of Granada, Spain, where he has been professor at the Dept. of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Since April 2006, he is the Principal Researcher of the "Applications of Fuzzy Logic and Evolutionary Algorithms" research unit at the European Centre for Soft Computing, located in Mieres, Asturias. Last December, 2008, he received the Full Professor accreditation from the Spain’s National Quality Evaluation Agency.


Prof. Cordón has a wide international experience in the area of soft computing, specifically in the fundamentals and applications of evolutionary algorithms and other metaheuristics, as well as in fuzzy systems. He has published more than 210 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including a co-authored book on genetic fuzzy systems and 47 SCI-JCR-indexed journal papers. In February, 5, 2009, his publications had received 917 citations, carrying an h-index of 17, and being included in the 1% of most cited researchers in the world (source: Thomson’s Web of Knowledge; h-index=27 in Google Scholar). He has participated in 24 national and European research projects and contracts, coordinating 9 of them. Dr. Cordón is associate editor and editorial board member of six scientific journals. He also created the Genetic Fuzzy Systems Task Force, Fuzzy Systems Technical Committee, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, in 2004 and chaired it till 2007. Moreover, he is a member of the IPC of more than 80 conferences and frequently acts as a reviewer for more than 20 international journals.


His current main research interests are in the fields of soft computing for forensic anthropology and medical imaging; genetic fuzzy systems; soft computing and visual science maps; and evolutionary computation, ant colony optimization and other metaheuristics.

KMS Division was established

The Division of Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) was established on  December 3, 2008, by the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Management at the Wrocław University of Technology. Professor Ngoc Thanh Nguyen was nominated for the Head of the KMS Division. Moreover, the KMS Division consisted of five assistant professors: Radosław Katarzyniak, Maciej Kiewra, Dariusz Król, Janusz Sobecki, and Bogdan Trawinski.
